One of the great things about being a Wedding Photographer in Saratoga Springs is that I get to meet some really talented people. One of the people I have gotten to know over the years is Joanna Romanzo, the owner/stylist of Lipstick N Lashes. Joanna and her staff provide hair and makeup for lots of Capital Region brides. In addition, Lipstick N Lashes is a full service salon. So without further ado, here is the scoop on my friend Joanna:
How did you get started as a stylist?
“It was shortly after High School, and I was not sure what I wanted to do. I was not cut out for college–I was more of a creative type. I went into retail, which was fun and I was able to be creative with clothing and accessories, but it was not a career. I talked to my mom about Cosmetology school, and we went and visited a few schools together. That was it! I was all in and could not wait to start. I went to a school in Albany called Colonna, and it was the absolute best experience. I met one of my very best friends Lisa while in school, and we have been friends over 20 years now.”
When and how did you start your business?
“I started out on my own in 2008 after working for other people for many years. I did not work many different places. I was always very loyal so I stayed with employers for many years until it was time for me to move on. I never wanted to have my own business–it seemed like so much time and work, and with three kids, I did not want them to suffer. At that time in my life, it was just the right time and I made it work. I have my own style, my own vision, and I love it!
What have you learned from being in business?
“I have learned so much! I think one of the most important things that I have learned is the value of good employees. I have a great solid team, and I treat them well and they treat me well. I have also learned that it is a dog eat dog world out there, and if I want to be successful, hard work is the key. I am a hard worker–I get that from my Dad, who is retired military.
What do you love about weddings?
“I love the emotion and the energy when it comes to the wedding day. I tend to get really close to my brides (and bridesmaids and moms). When it comes to the wedding day, I just want everyone to feel pretty and happy! Enjoy every moment of the getting ready process, it is part of the big day!
What is the biggest mistake you have made and/or what would you have changed or done over?
“I have made a lot of mistakes, a ton–but I would not change anything. Those mistakes got me to the next level personally and professionally. You have to make mistakes in life, that is how you learn and grow.
