About Saratoga Photographer Susan Blackburn

It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words…what will your photographs say about you to your children–and your grandchildren?

My friend and fellow photographer Genine Gullickson created this headshot for me.  It was different for me being the one photographed–definitely gave me some insight into how it feels being on the other side of the camera.

As a Saratoga Wedding Photographer and Portrait Photographer, I have recently started asking my clients, “How do you dream of being photographed?”  As a Wedding and Portrait Photographer, it is my job to create photos that speak to who you are.  Because I believe that is very important, especially as a Wedding Photographer.  I believe that it is important for you to exist in photographs.   Not just for you–but for your family and your friends.  My goal as a photographer is to give you photographs that you will cherish forever.  I want you to have a piece of art that you will walk by in your home every day and think, “Wow, I really love that picture.”  More importantly, I want your kids to have great photos of you.

How did I become a Wedding Photographer and Portrait Photographer in Saratoga?

I moved to Saratoga when I got married and had my first baby.  While I had gone to art school and worked in the Garment Industry prior to that, I had only ever played around with a camera for fun.  As a kid my family used to go to museums in New York, and I always loved looking at the portraits.  But I never really thought of it as a career.  Anyway, I answered an ad in the paper for a photographer because I needed a job on the weekends and the rest is history.  I loved meeting and photographing people and making them look good.  I can’t explain it–it is like I was meant to do this.  I worked for several studios in the area for ten years.  And that was great because I learned so much about photography and business–it was almost like getting an MBA.

This is the very first camera I bought in college with my own money.

What do I love about being a Photographer?

As a Saratoga Wedding Photographer and Portrait Photographer, I get to wear a lot of different hats.  On any given day, I can be a portrait artist, a fashion photographer, a photojournalist, or a baby whisperer.  And I like that a lot.  Wedding Photography in particular keeps me on my toes at all times.  It is always challenging, sometimes stressful, and never dull.  I love watching stories unfold and documenting them.  I love giving people a beautiful portrait or wedding album and watching them tear up.  And as an added bonus, I get to meet the most interesting and wonderful people who allow me to photograph some of the greatest moments in their lives.  What is more special than that?
